Svante Gullichsen’s debut exhibition, HANGING ON, is an open narrative of self-discovery, the erosion of mental health, and its subse-quent reconstruction. The artworks consist of self-portraits captured by Gullichsen between 2015 and 2020. The pieces address challenging themes through nature—ex-ploring how grey mossy patches consume a person from within, pro-viding a sense of security from the world while simultaneously shutting everything out. They depict moments when the pristine white winter landscape suddenly shatters, and the image and mind are engulfed in pitch-black smoke. A significant portion of the images is captured at Gullichsen’s family summer cottage in the archipelago of Porvoo, some in the wil-derness of Lapland, or in abandoned mines, for example. The common thread in the works is a pervasive sense of desolation; they navigate boundary states, often devoid of other people. Emotions are con-fronted directly in the images, and the honesty of the pictures can at times feel raw. The prevalent nudity in the artworks reflects a sense of vulnerability in the human psyche amidst external forces. The pieces combine mystery, natural forces, the struggle of light and shadow, and unnatural situations within the familiar Finnish forest landscape.
